About Howard

A professional artist, illustrator and visualiser with years of experience working in advertising and design. I currently divide my time between commercial projects, exhibitions and gallery work. My personal paintings, pencil drawings and pen and ink drawings are inspired by landscapes, contours, weathering and architecture. Commissions welcome. Biography

Howard studied art and design at Manchester in the mid 1970's and was tutored by, amongst others, Graphic designer Cameron McClean, artist Tub Williams and Children's book illustrator Tony Ross.

He graduated at Manchester Polytechnic School of Art with a BA(Hons) degree in Graphic Design specialising in Illustration being a member of the 'class of '78' alongside fellow students including designers Peter Saville and Malcolm Garrett, artists Peter Jones, John Thompson, Ian McCullough, Gwyneth Jones and Jonathan Field to name but a few.

He moved to London where, in collaboration with Young Artists fronted by Alison Eldred and John Spencer, he produced illustrations for book publishers and advertising agencies. The agency also represented Gordon Crabb, John Harris, Jim Burns, George Underwood and Nigel Chamberlain. All esteemed book cover artists at that time.

In the early 1980's he relocated to Cheshire and continued as a freelance illustrator for Manchester advertising and design agencies. He also used his technical skills to produce highly detailed architectural perspective drawings, aerial views and interpretational work for the likes of the National Trust, English Heritage and Property developments.

With the decline of the use of illustration and the advent of computer generated imagery Howard turned his attention to painting and drawing for his own enjoyment and for private commissions. He now sells his originals and art prints at Galleries and Exhibitions throughout Derbyshire, Cheshire and the surrounding areas.
